In the last of this four-part series, we wrap up with still more surprises. It’s the kind of night out witnessing that we dream of having, even if we’re running out of steam. If you missed the previous three newsletters, you can find them here:
Running on Empty
My energy was finally running out, and I let Matthew know that I needed to call it a night. He took my info and said he would be in touch. Please say a prayer for him.
I got on the train to go home. It was pretty uneventful. When I started walking off the train, I still had two books with me. Usually when I head downtown, I take 20 booklets and four books with me. My goal is to make sure all of them are planted in someone’s life before I get home. I don’t always hit that goal, but it is the goal I have. So I said, “God, where do these two books go?”
As I walked out, the area where people wait for buses and Ubers had a younger guy who was dribbling a basketball. So I dropped my backpack and said, “Let’s play some one-on-one!” I am so glad he didn’t take me up on the offer! He tossed me the ball. So I showed him a drill he can do to work on his shot. We started chatting. He was a 20-year-old Hispanic guy who loved hoops. And he loved to read! I gave him a copy of One Heartbeat Away.
Out of the Shadows
As that was happening, an older guy standing behind him off to the side was looking at us. He said, “Are you Mark Cahill?” Uh-oh. Where is this about to go? I let him know that I was.
Gregory said, “I read your book Paradise, and it absolutely changed my life!” Talk about a wow on top of a wow! He started crying and gave me a big bear hug.
I asked him how he got the book. He told me that he read it while he was in jail. Never, ever, ever give up on someone who has been incarcerated. That might be the event that God uses to finally get their full and complete attention.
When I got in my car, it was 10:50 p.m., and I still had to drive home! I was wiped out, but in a good way.
What a day! Go have a great day for the Lord today!
Until the nets are full,
P.S. It was so busy during the night that I never had a chance to pull out my phone and take a picture of the venue or the crowd. But I took these pictures after Matthew and I were finished talking. Those are my feet. There are two areas outside of the arena that are great places to stand and witness. I realized that my feet have stood in one of those spots for 30 years now! That is a long time. God is good! Hit the streets where lost souls are dying to hear some good news from you!
