I stopped to get some gas this morning. Gas stations are great places to hand out tracts and get into some conversations. Every walk of life gets gas. Whether you are rich or poor, you have to fill up your tank. Unless, of course, you have to plug in your Tesla!
A gentleman was walking out of the store, so I struck up a conversation with him. I decided to give him $20 for gas and told him it was a gift from Jesus. So we walked into the store to put that amount on his pump.
He was wearing a Tupac shirt. Tupac was a rapper back in the day. I looked at him and said, “Tupac and Biggie are both on the other side now.” Biggie Smalls was also a rapper from the same era. The East Coast and West Coast rap labels were always fighting and writing about it in their music. I looked it up, and they both died almost thirty years ago. Man, does this life go by quickly.
I looked around the store, motioned with my hand, and said, “One hundred years from now, every one of us is on the other side. All that is going to matter is what you do with Jesus.”
We walked back out to my car and talked a while. Kevin had spent 15 years in prison. He got out, got his CDL license, and was working for a company here in town. An “ex” of his decided to hurt him, so she called the company he worked for and told them that he was on probation. He told me that he had lied on his application and didn’t check the box for being on probation. So, he was fired.
Leviticus 19:11
Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.
We talked about hanging with the right people and being on the right track in life.
As we talked more about Jesus, he said something very interesting. He said when he was in jail, he did a lot of reading about other religions.
One thing you find out when you do prison ministry is that a lot of guys can’t read. Well, if they can’t read, that eliminates a ton of jobs they could have. Also, if they can’t read, they cannot read God’s Word. That is not good.
The neat thing is that many of them learn how to read in prison. And many of them become voracious readers. They just consume books. They are trying to fill their time up each day.
Kevin was very glad to get The Second Greatest Lie booklet, which is about all of the different religions of the world. He also took a copy of One Heartbeat Away and One Second After You…
Do you see now why it is important that we get a lot of good, solid books and materials into the prisons? There are a ton of false teachings in those institutions. I hear it from the men all the time.
But one of the most interesting things about this encounter with Kevin is that he didn’t take his eyes off of me the whole time. He kept looking at my face. He was amazed that someone would just walk up, talk with him, and give him some time out of their day.
Do you care about souls? Do you care about the souls of folks who are in prison or out of prison now? Prove it by sharing your faith with someone today.
Hebrews 13:3
Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.
