Humility in the Courtroom

Judge Tammy Kemp, who presided over the Botham Jean murder case, explains what happened in the courtroom after the guilty verdict was rendered. Never before had she seen a victim’s family, a defendant’s family, and both legal teams break out in tears and hugs after a murder conviction. It was a courtroom full of humbled hearts.

That cascading display of humility that swept through the courtroom happened because the Lord used Brandt Jean, the victim’s brother, to extend love and forgiveness to Amber Guyger. This event now stands as a testament to millions of God’s immense love and mercy that He wants to show toward anyone who repents of their sin and believes the gospel.

Psalm 130:3-5

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

Psalm 86:5

For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon.

Psalm 103:10-12

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

The message of hope and forgiveness is for everyone, from the moral man to the murderer. Be sure to back up the gospel you give with that same mercy and forgiveness. Love and truth are a powerful combination.

P.S. A prison sentence or another serious situation can really make you think about the need for God’s mercy and forgiveness. We all need it, but the lost especially need it. Handing them a tract or maybe giving them a gift bag filled with treats with a tract can make a big difference. Mail carriers, cashiers, people at the park, the staff where you have lunch, and others will appreciate those small gestures. They can go a long way in feeding someone’s soul.
