“About this time a year ago, my ex-husband came from Dallas to join a birthday celebration with our three grown children and their kids in Salt Lake City. I gave Kerry One Heartbeat Away with the promise that he would read it. I thought the fact that you played basketball at Auburn and hung out with Charles Barkley would entice him, since he’d had a great four-year basketball career at the University of Kansas. I knew with all the stories in the book that included athletes, he’d enjoy the read. But, best of all, I wanted him to give his relationship with God a fresh look. Unbeknownst to us all, he had been diagnosed with a tumor on his lung. I believe he was seeking answers to the questions we all ask when facing death: “What is next? You see, on October 1st, Kerry had a stroke while driving to his last chemotherapy appointment. He sustained too many injuries to survive the ensuing car accident and passed into eternity on Oct 14th. But he was aware that his whole family was gathered around him. He heard them all praying for him. The surgery team even texted the family four times during his six hours of surgery that they were praying and wanted the family to keep up their prayers as well.
The way God has used your book didn’t stop with him. After he died, my daughter, Kelly, was terribly distraught, fearful that her dad might not be in Heaven, until the stories began to surface. She found out about the impact One Heartbeat Away had on him. He had kept his promise to read the book and insisted that his Christian sisters-in-law also read it so he could discuss it with them.
