Imagine

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games may have ended Sunday night, but for Chris, the opening ceremony of the Olympics marks a milestone in his life. He wrote in to share his story, which we have included here for you:

Mr. Cahill,

I am writing to tell you “thank you” for writing your book, One Heartbeat Away. I also would like to tell you that I am FORGIVEN. Your book has made me stop and think awful hard about what’s out there after we pass. I am 45 years old and have felt that something was missing from my life, even though I tried to fill that void with cars, money, fancy vacations, and anything else I could think of. The last several years have been hard for me: I went through a nasty divorce, I had to close my business, and I have lost folks who were dear to me. However, with that said, I have also been blessed with a wonderful woman whom I have married. She has given me two beautiful daughters and has also steered me closer to our Lord and Savior.

Your book was given to me by one of our home group leaders. An interesting story about reading your book is this: I got your book on Wednesday night at our group. It sat on the end table for a couple of days before I got the courage to read it. I say “courage” because I was scared to see what I might read in there. I had been lying to myself for years with several excuses for why I ignored the Holy Spirit in me. I am real good at packaging up feelings in nice, convenient boxes in my mind and shelving them in the DO NOT TOUCH section. Like a lot of folks, I was “saved” at a church camp at a young age. That is no excuse, mind you, but that is how I came to find the Lord the first time in my life.

Anyway, back to the story about the book. I started reading it this past Friday. I spent most of the day reading it. My wife and kids got home, and we sat down to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics. I still had your book in my hand and read it during commercials or when the ceremony just wasn’t that interesting to me.

Here is the interesting thing that happened: I was at the page where you talk about John Lennon’s song “Imagine.” Just as I read that paragraph, they started singing that song on the Olympics! I turned pale white, and my wife said, “What is wrong? Are you okay?” I said, “They are singing John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine.’” She said, “Yes.” I started reading that paragraph in the book to her and said, “Just when I finished this paragraph, they started singing that song. What are the odds of me reading that page and people singing that song on the TV at the same time? There are no odds to explain that, other than God himself.”

I have learned to quiet my mind and try to listen to what God is telling me. Your book has helped with that as well as my home group and church. I just felt like I would share this with you. I plan on ordering several copies of your book and giving it to my adult children and friends. Thank you again for what you do.

Good Morning, Mr. Cahill,  

My name is St. Thomas.  I am writing this because I read your book The Watchmen while in here. Let me tell you, I lived a life full of sin. When I got put in here on false charges, I decided to turn to God. The Bible was “getting” to me, but your book was the icing on the cake. My dad was a pastor and told me until the day he died, “Kid, you will become a pastor someday.” I said, “Yeah, whatever.” But now, that is something I am really thinking about. I can’t wait to get out and witness. I have even helped people in here. So I want you to know your book is helping people all over. I also ask you to pray that all goes well for me, and that God has mercy on me so I can start my reborn life right.
